Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) is a nonprofit division of the American Angus Association created in 1978 with the mission of increasing demand for Angus cattle through a specification-based branded beef program. After years of groundwork establishing demand and licensing processors, foodservice, restaurants, retailers and international markets, the CAB Program hit a critical mass with some 80 million pounds in annual sales 12 years ago. An amazing 535% growth in sales of Certified Angus Beef ® product by licensees in the 1990s carried the Program to more than half a billion pounds sold last year.

Approximately 80% of the fed cattle processing industry has been licensed, allowing for the licensing of 9,000 retail and restaurant businesses in the U.S. and 40 international locations. The Program's excellent and growing demand led to creation of the Feedlot Licensing Program in 1999, and Hergert Land & Cattle Company became the first partner in Colorado to sign on. Nationwide, 2 million Angus-type cattle were required to meet demand last year, and that number is expected to double in the years ahead, equaling more demand for high-quality Angus cattle.
